Since back pain is so widespread here are some tips to help you if you start getting twinges over the holidays.

  • Do not ignore pain hoping it will go away. It is a warning that should make you stop, think and remedy the cause. Do not use painkillers long term.
  • Sit on firm cushioned, upright chairs, and do not sit or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Sleep on a firm mattress. Too hard or too soft is no good.
  • Keep as mobile as you can, prolonged bed rest is not advisable for most kinds of back pain.
  • Do not cough or sneeze in a bent over position.
  • Avoid bending, lifting or twisting.
  • Use ice packs to reduce inflammation.
  • Do not persist in an activity that is making you sore.
  • Do not delay seeking help if you have a problem that is not improving with the self help methods.

Have a happy, healthy pain free holiday!
