Leonard has recommended 5 tweaks to improve your posture, not just for the benefit of your back, but very good for most of your anatomy! According to osteopath James Davies, poor posture is a silent killer. It means we don’t achieve full lung capacity, and can impact our digestive system as well. Alan Nevies and associates at northlondonosteopaths agree with his suggestions to improve posture and would be very happy to guide patients in performing these movements properly and effectively. They are as follows:

Side lunge: Stand with your legs as wide as possible, and bend each knee from side to side. You can rest your hands on your thighs if needed.

Butterfly elbows: You can do this seated. Interlace your fingers behind the base of your skull, lift your chin slightly and raise your elbows. Draw a circle with your elbows, aiming to find a stretch through the thoracic spine.

Figure of 8 hug: Give yourself a big hug, taking your hands to the opposite shoulder with one elbow on top of the other. Try bending to the side from this position.

Star: Stretch out your limbs to their furthest points.

Stretch Walk: Standing with feet together, bend one leg at the knee, then stretch it out to a height that feels comfortable. Repeat with the other leg.

Doing these moves regularly will build up good posture habits. Standing taller, breathing better and building strength in joints and muscles, Alan Nevies and associates at northlondonosteopaths will help you get them right.
